Here at One Dental, Belgaum, we pride ourselves on helping patients bolster their self-esteem after completing their orthodontic work. While other clinics might focus on just the aesthetic elements of orthodontic work, we focus on the functional elements as well, providing help for any issues a patient might have with their mouth.
This ability to assist patients in completing their mouth’s functional purpose is why we are one of the best clinics in Belgaum; other clinics do not have our advanced level of orthodontic work. One of our patients, and now one of our favourite success stories, was a fellow doctor who needed help with a full mouth transformation.
The Patient’s Concern: Visible Gaps and a Hidden Tooth
One of our favourite patients, a fellow doctor, is now one of our favourite success stories, as she requires no further assistance with her full mouth transformation.
She came to us as a referral from one of our former patients, and she described herself as one who could not resolve a trapped tooth and the presence of gaps in her mouth.
This was a defensive mechanism on her part, as in reality, she was a very accomplished doctor. The gaps and the impaction of one of her teeth, which was a classic case of a dentition that needed help, were a source of self-consciousness in her mouth. One of the teeth that was visibly falling out was a source of embarrassment for her.
These problems are more prevalent than you may realise. Impacted teeth (typically canines) can fail to emerge due to insufficient space, crowding, or abnormal positioning.
This phenomenon can lead to visible gaps elsewhere in the arch as it compensates, creating diastema, spaces between teeth. This condition can affect one's appearance and bite alignment, and can lead to further problems down the line.
As a patient-facing professional, she not only wanted a confident smile, one without gaps, but one that reflected her personality. She articulated a need for a natural and harmonious look that did not derail her busy day-to-day activities.
Expert Diagnosis
At One Dentall, any treatment begins with a comprehensive exam. Each member of the expert team is equipped with industry-leading tools and recently made digital X-rays and intraoral scans. This allows a thorough assessment of the oral condition, enhancing the quality of the service.
After careful examination, we arrived at the point of offering a solution.
Alternative methods may include cosmetic options such as veneers or bonding. After weighing these options, our orthodontists determined the most appropriate long-term solution would be to complete orthodontic treatment.
This method takes care of the problem constructively by making space to direct the tooth into position and close the gaps without invasive procedures or artificial coverings.
The patient trusted the referral, so she was quick to agree to what we proposed.
The Treatment Journey: Step by Step
In total, the orthodontic treatment took 1.5 years, or 18 months, which is fairly customary for a range of cases that involve impacted teeth, as it takes some time for slow and gentle movement.
Phase 1: Alignment and Space Creation
To start, we placed upper and lower fixed braces on both arches. The initial wires on braces start to align the visible teeth and create space in the arch for the impacted tooth.
This one is the most important case of impacted teeth. Bringing the tooth out without enough space can cause serious damage to adjacent roots or gums.
Phase 2: Bringing the tooth to position
The focus of this section of treatment is the movement of the impacted tooth into its proper place in the dental arch.
After the earlier steps in the space-making process were completed, a small surgical exposure was made, and we added a bracket/button to the impacted tooth. We utilised elastic chains and other orthodontic materials to apply continuous, gentle force to the button to bring the tooth into the arch.
Because orthodontics is an art and science, this process does require a fair amount of time. We recommend surgical deactivation of orthodontic appliances every 4 to 6 weeks.
Although we adjust the appliances, we do our best to provide continuous support to our patients. Discomfort should be minimal; pain, however, as modern equipment located at One Dental should lessen over-the-counter pain medications.
Phase 3: Final Alignment and Gap Closure
The focus of this section of treatment is the movement of the impacted tooth into its proper place in the dental arch.
The lateral measures undertaken during this phase of treatment focus on closing the gaps where the bottom teeth were located, aligning the tooth structure to create a well-defined, attractive smile.
The Outstanding Results
Leaving a gap-free, versatile smile was an outstanding process. Now, as our former patient demonstrates a well-fitting spatial arch, a closed dental arch, and a lateral tooth structure integration, the efficiency of closing the gap and the integrated tooth structure is enhancing position and reducing the strain on the efficient chewing process.
The excitement of moving to Dubai for new career possibilities coincided with the end of her treatment. She left Belgaum with her new smile, thanking the team by saying, “I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. The team at One Dentall made the entire process comforting and rewarding.”
Why is orthodontic treatment the best option available for smile correction?
This case exemplifies why orthodontic treatment is the best option when a patient presents with impacted teeth and diastemas:
Natural Results:
Orthodontics is the only option that provides real, lasting, and authentic smiles by moving teeth. This is not the case with veneers and bonding, as those options simply mask the problem.
Health Benefits:
Aligned teeth are easier to care for. Proper alignment reduces the risks and incidence of tooth decay, gum disease, and uneven wear. Good bite function prevents TMJ issues, while poor bite function can create a myriad of other problems.
Confidence Boost:
Having a straight smile can be life-changing and increase self-esteem, especially for professionals, like our patient.
Long-Term Investment:
Results don’t come easy. Retainers must be worn, and results must be maintained, but the results of orthodontic treatment, when kept, are permanent.
For complex cases, like impacted canines, studies show that orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from 18 to 30 months. This lines up perfectly with our patient’s treatment time of 1.5 years.
Our Orthodontic Services For Your Diverse Needs
- Aligner Treatment :
Aligner treatment uses custom-made, clear, removable plastic trays to gradually straighten crooked or crowded teeth. It offers a discreet alternative to traditional braces, improving smile aesthetics and oral hygiene over 6–18 months.
- Cosmetic Treatment
Cosmetic treatments focus on bettering the appearance of your smile through procedures that include teeth whitening, veneers, and bonding.
These options focus on issues such as discoloration, chips, gaps, or misalignment for a brighter, more confident look.
- Regular Elective Treatments
Regular elective treatments such as non-essential procedures chosen for aesthetic or comfort improvements, and routine teeth whitening or minor bonding.
It is beyond basic care, boosting smile confidence without addressing urgent health issues.
- Specialized Treatments
Specialized treatments involve advanced care from dental experts, like root canals (endodontics), gum disease therapy (periodontics), or implants (prosthodontics).
These target complex issues requiring extra training for optimal function and health restoration.
- TMJ
TMJ treatments manage disorders of the temporomandibular joint, relieving jaw pain, clicking, or limited movement through splints, therapy, or medications.
Conservative approaches like nightguards often reduce muscle tension and improve jaw function effectively.
Understanding Impacted Teeth and Diastema
Impacted teeth are teeth that have not grown completely because of crowding and genetic factors. One common type of impacted teeth is the maxillary canines, which cause both esthetic and functional concerns.
Another concern is diastemas, which are dental gaps that can occur from having a tooth jaw size discrepancy, a tooth being absent, impacted, or from habits. While many patients enjoy small gaps, larger diastemas are a common concern that causes an individual to seek treatment for esthetic, functional, and/or psychological reasons.
Both of these concerns can be addressed with a biological approach by orthodontists using healthy teeth repositioning.
